Geophysics in Action

Strata is excited to share that we recently started using a new geophysics technology. Using what are called geophones, these sensitive devices, set up on the surface of the ground, can measure soil characteristics up to 200 feet below the surface without having to drill. This is very helpful at locations where it isn’t possible to get a drill rig into the site, which is often the case at the site of a landslide. Also delays in scheduling a drill rig can be avoided.
VsSurf ReMi™ software provides us with the ability to record and analyze surface waves, produced by both ambient and generated seismic signals, for increasing understanding of the subsurface. Modules in VsSurf ReMi software allow for Quality Assurance and Quality control of field data to ensure we leave the field knowing we have the information we need. The analysis produces report ready results. This is very helpful in determining earthquake ground shaking potential, understanding seismic velocities, and constraining the depth of soil and rock interfaces, among others. We’ve already used the tool at two different job sites, one in Woodland and another in Coos County at the site of a road repair.
